Report #12 - 27 April 2009

I was born on Easter Sunday and the anniversary of Lincoln's death. I had nothing to do with either event.

This week's poem is called "Birthday Poem, 2009." I've been trying to write one of these on each birthday for the last several years. They are sort of my State of the Poet Address. This year finds me in better sorts than the last few have. Thank you, Rocky Mountains.

The music is the final movement of Oscar Peterson's profoundly beautiful Easter Suite for Jazz Trio. The track is titled "He Has Risen." If this had been the music played in the church I went to as a child, along with Sam Cooke & The Soul Stirrers or The Carter Family; I'd probably still be showing up every Sunday with, as my brother says, "a Bible in one hand and a Hymnal in the other." The recording features Oscar Peterson on piano, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Martin Drew on drums.
