This week's poem lay forgotten in a journal from 2004. "This Song Playing" was written back in Saginaw on the porch of The 303. Somehow, I can't remember what song was playing.
The music this week, "It's Only a Paper Moon" features the group led by one of my favorite drummers, Art Blakey (he's at the top of the short list with Philly Joe Jones and Nick Ashton): The Jazz Messengers have had many great releases, including The Big Beat (Blue Note; recorded 6 March 1960). Personnel include: Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Lee Morgan (trumpet, flugelhorn), Bobby Timmons (piano), Jymie Merritt (bass), and Blakey (drums).
